Pissing on protocol

In politics, protocol is very important. There have to be rules of behaviour. Etiquette, if you like. Without such rules, the often complex business of politics can get very messy, and much more difficult. People have to know their place – in the sense of being aware of their own areas of responsibility and who they should defer to in other areas.

What can seem like mere trivial courtesies demanded by nothing more than tradition can, in fact, be important elements of the political process. When Corbyn commented as he did on Kezia Dugdale’s antipodean antics, he didn’t just slap down Richard Leonard, he disrespected the entire British Labour membership in Scotland. And the casually contemptuous manner in which he breached protocol speaks volumes about hi attitude to Scotland.

Had this been a disciplinary matter under the jurisdiction of a Constituency Labour Party in England, there can be little doubt that Corbyn would automatically have declined to answer questions; referring the questioner to the appropriate authority. At the very least, as a professional politician, his instincts would have bade him respond with some caution to such questions.

But it was only Scotland. So it’s of no consequence. In fact, opportunities to demean the uppity Jocks should be seized upon as serving the agenda of ‘One Nation’ British Nationalism.

More sickening than the perfunctory insults, however, is the way in which the likes of Leonard meekly accept the affront. The obvious conclusion being that they share Corbyn’s view of Scotland as inferior.

Upon reflection and depending on where one is situated geographically and constitutionally on this landmass and in terms of the asymmetrical Union Treaty, “lick” or “kick” will do.
