With its proposed amendments to the Tories’ Article 50 Bill, the SNP is trying to polish a turd. I don’t think anybody seriously imagines there to be any possibility of meaningfully reducing the negative impact of Brexit. But they have to try. More importantly, the Scottish Government has to be seen to try.
There is no better indicator of the crucial importance of what our First Minister and her team are doing than the fact that Tory mouthpiece, Adam Tomkins, is trying so frantically to get them to stop. Make no mistake, the SNP’s measured, thoughtful and reasonable response to the British Government’s recklessness, ineptitude and intransigence is embarrassing Tomkins’ masters in London.
The contrast between the two approaches is much remarked upon in quarters not under the baleful influence of the British state’s propaganda machine. That contrast shows the British political establishment in a bad light at least as much as it does credit to Scotland’s real government. You know! The one we actually voted for!
