Lies and questions

The important point regarding David Mundell’s lies about Scotland’s trade is, not the fact that the messages coming from the British establishment are inconsistent, contradictory and false, but that the authors of these messages are fully aware of this. And they just don’t care. As was demonstrated during the first independence referendum campaign, the forces of British nationalism are perfectly at ease with abandoning all moral and ethical standards, and even reason itself, as they mount a desperate last-ditch defence of the union.

They do this safe in the knowledge that most of the media, and large parts of the electorate, will never challenge them. The mainstream media being part of, and dependent on, the structures of power, privilege and patronage which define the British state, can be relied upon to dutifully trumpet the British establishment’s propaganda without demur.

And large numbers of people will consume these messages uncritically simply because they have never been taught or encouraged to do otherwise.

Change starts, not with a decision, but with a question.
