Surreal seems such a small word to describe a scenario in which Tony Blair reenters mainstream politics in the UK. Make Jim Murphy part of that story and the term becomes woefully inadequate. It seems that there is no politician so comprehensively failed in a variety of roles or so thoroughly reviled by the general public that they cannot imagine themselves a deserving candidate for rehabilitation.
As well as being aghast and appalled at the prospect of this pair of poisonous personalities playing a part in our politics, I suspect I’m not alone in being utterly perplexed about the thought-process that led to such a decision. What was the fanciful conversation that Blair had with himself which brought him to the epiphany that the thing the whole Brexit fiasco was lacking was his involvement?
What capricious notions wandering aimlessly through the caverns of Jim Murphy’s mind coalesced into the conclusion that he was destined to be the one to bring sense and order to a situation which defies all sense and order?
What random firings of neurons sparked a belief in either of these individuals that here was a pairing of minds such as might bring a measure of illumination to a situation of Stygian opaqueness?
What the **** were they thinking?
